Micro Blogging for Quick Updates
We all have witnessed in year 2009 that Twitter is an awesome tool to keep your people updated with the help of Micro Blogging. In the past year it became the most hot trend on the Web.
Not only celebreties and companies but now Govt. Organisations like NRLDC is also using it to keep their audience updated by the proceedings. As a conclusion of the meeting with Power Controller in this regard with reference to the updates from HPSLDC we are also initiating the updates of HP Grid on the said application tool.
Apart from the main pages of these Microblogs these updates can be read from the side bar of our main blog (HPSLDC Pulse). Also we are providing two links on our website for the Microblogging updates. One from HPSLDC and another from NRLDC. However the both will run smoothly if and only if you have enabled the java script execution of your web browser.

Previous Demand Trends Usage for Day-Ahead Forecasting
Generally forecasting of day ahead schedules are based on the past trends of demands which we have archived in the form of hard and soft copies of data. Recently on this notion we have developed a new module in which we are picking trends of demand as a auto.
In our Auto-Generation of Day-Ahead Schedules now Actual demand will be used as a trend for the next day forecasted demand. It is done by adding a new module to pick up the previous day’s actual demand as trend for next day.
A new value can be interpolated on previous trend as estimated anticipated demand.
Form our archives we have already initiated the process of populating the last four year actual demand trends into our databases in the desired formats.
Remark: In order to provide ease to the work force deployed at shift we have started contemplating on the direction where the S/W is going to suggest you the trend to be picked up.

Normalisation of Rishikesh-Khodri System – Lifting of Restrictions on Giri & Barotiwala-II
SLDC Control Room Case Study
Lifting of Restrictions & Normalisation of System thereof
From Power Controller Desk
220 KV Khodri-Majri Line was out since 13:20 Hrs of 07-01-2010, due to outage of 220KV Khodri-Rishikesh Line. Due to this, system at Giri (H.P) was as under:
1. 132 KV Paonta was being through Jalandhar System.(Load restriction of ~8MW)
2. 132 KV Kala Amb was being fed through Jalandhar System.(Load restriction of ~35MW)
3. 132/33 KV Local Transformer-I was isolated.
4. 132/33 KV Local Transformer-I was being fed through Kulhal System.( 8MW Load allowed by SLDC, Rishikesh).
Apart from this, Load restriction to the tune of 15 MW on GACL & 15 MW on Barotiwala-II was in force as same Load was already on Jalandhar System.
On dated 09.01.2010 at about 14:40 Hours, Khodri supply was restored up to Giri & initially 40-50 MW Load was allowed. Thus initially following change over were done:
1. At 14:45 Hrs. Khodri Supply was taken on 132KV Bus through 220/132KV Transformers a/w 132 KV Kulhal Supply & Kulhal Supply was disconnected, thus feeding 132/33 KV Local Transformer-II through Khodri Supply.
2. 132 KV Paonta was shifted from Jalandhar System to Khodri- 14:47 Hrs.-14:49 Hrs.
3. 132/33 KV Local Transformer-I charged 15:02 Hrs.
4. All restrictions at Paonta, Kala Amb, Local Transformers-I&II and GACL lifted at 15:00 Hrs. Restrictions on Barotiwala-II kept as it is as Giri Machine was Scheduled Zero MW w.e.f. 15:45 Hrs.
5. At about 15:15 Hrs, on contacting SLDC, Rishikesh for drawing normal Load on 220KV Khodri-Majri line, same was allowed by Rishikesh. System at Giri was again changed as follows:
a. 15:25 Hrs.-15:30 Hrs.- Paonta Shifted from Khodri to Jalandhar System.
b. 15:26 Hrs.-15:28 Hrs.- Kala Amb Shifted from Jalandhar to Khodri System.
In the mean time normal load was allowed to Barotiwala-II at 15:26 Hrs. & with this all restrictions stands lifted and complete H.P. System normalized.

Rishikesh-Khodri line outages and Restrictions on Giri & Barotiwala-II
SLDC Control Room Case Study
Situation due to Giri & Barotiwala-II restrictions and Rishikesh-Khodri outages
From Power Controller Desk
On 07.01.2010 at 13:20 hrs, 220kV Khodri-Majri line tripped from Khodri end due to outage of 220kV Khodri-Rishikesh line. However, line was charged up to Giri end from Saharanpur side but no drawl of power was allowed on this line by SLDC Rishikesh. I confirmed the matter from DGM (System Operations) Uttrakhand and it was given to understand that one of the phases of 220kV Rishikesh-Khodri line is not available and they are not able to spot the fault. It was also given to understand that the people are on the job and it is expected that fault may be cleared by 19:00 hours.
Before the outrage of this line Giri Local (17 MW) and 132kV Kala-Amb (90 MW) was being fed from Khodri and Paonta was being fed from Jalandhar-Hamirpur supply. Knowing that no power supply shall be available from Khodri, drawl to the tune of 20 MW was requested from Uttrakhand on 132kV Giri Kulhal line to feed Local Giri Area. Now the Kala-Amb area remained without power supply and there was no alternate to feed Kala-Amb full load either from Jalandhar-Hamirpur power supply or from Bhaba-Panchkula supply from Hamirpur because of the system constraints. The 220kV ICTs both at Kunihar and Jalandhar are load to their full capacity.
Power supply to local Giri was fed at 13:55 hrs from Kulhal Supply and after imposing restrictions to Kala Amb 35 to 40 MW power was fed from Solan side (Jalandhar supply). At 17:05 hrs, Kala-Amb was allowed to draw 55-60 MW. At about 17:00 hours, I again took up the matter with DGM, Uttrakhand who confirmed that they are unable to spot the fault and the line shall be patrolled on 8.1.2010 gain, but it is expected that line shall come by 17:00 hours of 8.1.2010. In view of this Control Room was instructed to convey the message of restrictions on Kala-Amb (40 MW), Paonta (20 MW) and Barotiwala (30 MW) since we were having no option left.
However this under arrangement also the transformers at Hamirpur were getting overloaded and at 20.02 hours when suddenly the Malan HEP stopped the entire system collapsed and Larji HEP also got desynchronized and thereafter supply to Giri Area could be restored at 20.45 hours.
The system till report, was working as per above arrangement.
At 6.50 Hours ICT at Kunihar tripped due to O/C and E/F whereas the loading of these transformers were 87 MW each. It has invariably been observed that these transformers which are very old behave erratically at times due to increase in temperature.
Add Your Remarks
Current Situation:
System is running under very critical and precarious situation. The maximum demand has touched 1105 MW on dated 7.1.2010 and our system is grossly inadequate to handle demand beyond this. Moreover our dependency on the power infrastructure of other states like Haryana and Uttarakhand for catering to about 400 to 550 MW of power of the State has put us in a pathetically miserable and helpless situation since any snag in these system lead to severe scarcity of power and to forced restrictions on Industries.

Let there be light – God Said & Grid Failed…
SLDC Control Room Case Study
Twice Grid Failure Event on Jan 2nd, 2010
From Power Controller Desk
Northern Region experienced a partial grid disturbance on the night of 1st – 2nd January, 2010 at 03:01 hrs. in which power supply in Punjab, North Haryana, HP, J & K and UT Chandigarh sub-system was affected. This was followed by another partial disturbance almost on the similar lines, during the late evening hours on the same day i.e. 2nd January, 2010 at 21:54 hrs. leading to Load loss of about 9000MW & Generation Loss of about 5159 MW(as per NRLDC report.) was reported in Northern region.
After initial disturbance during morning Hours, system was normalized during evening Hours.
Subsequently in this incident which took place between 2144 to 2154 hrs on the same day, a number of 400 kV and 220 kV lines feeding Punjab/Haryana/HP/J&K/UT Chandigarh sub-system had tripped (as per NRLDC reports). The incident initiated with a combination of faults at Bamnauli/Bawana and inadequate safety net in the separated sub-system leading to its collapse.
Himachal Pradesh which is connected through various interstate Links was left with only one link i.e. 220 KV Khodri-Majri (Uttarakhand System). Following is the list of interstate lines connecting H.P. which tripped simultaneously:
1. 220 KV Panchkula-Kunihar
2. 220 KV Panchkula-Baddi-Kunihar
3. 220 KV Jalandhar-Hamirpur-I
4. 220 KV Jalandhar-Hamirpur-II
5. 220 KV Dehar-Kangoo
6. 220 KV Jassure-Pong
7. 220 KV Jassure-RSD
8. 220 KV Jassure-Bairasiul
9. 132 KV Dehar-Kangoo
10. 132 KV Hamirpur-Chohal
With this, all connected Load a/w Running Generators tripped leading to load loss of about 750 MW & Generation Loss of about 285 MW. 400KV Baspa-Jhakri-I&II evacuating power of Baspa Power House also tripped at the same instant.
Detail of running Units under control of HPSEB which tripped is as under:
Larji Power House 32 MW
Bhaba Power House 40 MW
Bassi Power House 15 MW
Giri Power House 18 MW
Baspa Power House 140 MW
Micros(Unmonitored) 35 MW
Chart illustrating Demand Wise Normal & disturbance condition
Chart illustrating loss of Generation for the State
at 22.00 Hrs. on 2nd January 2010
Strategy Adopted:
Immediately, after condition of black out was faced, next came the most challenging task for the control room operators. Lightning entire State with Single Link available & that too the one which is usually considered the weakest link of our H.P. Grid-220KV Khodri-Majri, which was feeding Industrial Area of Kala Amb through only one Line surviving in H.P. Network, 132KV Giri-Kala Amb.
On contacting SLDC, Rishikesh for making them aware of situation of virtually complete Black out in Himachal Pradesh & ascertaining uninterrupted supply through Khodri, restriction of drawl to the limit of 50MW was imposed by them, yet another problem.
While in restoration process main points to be kept in mind were that of keeping Voltages under control as high voltages hamper synchronizing of Generators & closing of Circuit Breakers, as closing of Breakers under High Voltage condition increases the re striking voltage for the breaker enhancing the chances of Trippings.
As Transmission Network was to be charged through Giri(Nahan) to near & far end areas of the state like Solan, BhabaNagar, Hamirpur, Kullu, Jassure etc, correct combination of Generation along with Load was required. Hence keeping all points in mind restoration process was initiated immediately.
Summary of Events:
21:55 Hrs. Supply Failed through all inter state points except 220KV Khodri-Majri leading to Generation loss in all running units at Bhaba, Larji, Ghanvi, Bassi along with Load loss in entire state except Kala Amb.
22:10 Hrs. Unit-II of Giri Power House synchronized with Khodri.
